I see the mouth that will swallow
me.
The mouth of a demon, wide in
the ecstasy of agony;
Stench-ridden with old blood
and decaying flesh.
I have no power.
I am weak.
I scream inside but no sound
exudes.
My heart and lungs collapse.
My brain explodes
And a million dreams collide
In eternal battle for supremacy.
The master of those dreams is
gone.
Swallowed by a devil, they say.
Kicking and clawing at the crumbling
teeth
To find only putrid blood and
pus
And the bodies of those before.
I am gone.
I am dead.
The demon reigns supreme.
He interrupts my careless nights
With visions of actions outlawed
by society,
Repelled by conscience.
Scream and sweat and tear at
your eyes
But you can’t escape.
Memories fresh of yesteryear,
Cherished moments a blur.
Backward, backward through the
years
Backward, back you spur the mind
Go faster !
Let me remember before I die
!
Awake !
Sheets soaked in perspiration.
Mind soaked in guilt and humility.
Coffee now, the first cigarrette.
Then on, on with the bright new
day.
Beware the night.
